What is an eSIM?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card built into your phone. Instead of slotting in a piece of plastic, you scan a QR code and a mobile plan is installed directly onto your device β ready to connect the moment you land.
π² How an eSIM works
Your phone already has a tiny chip soldered inside it that can store mobile plans. When you buy a Volo eSIM, we send you a QR code by email. Scanning it writes a travel data plan onto that chip. You can keep your normal SIM in place at the same time β the eSIM simply runs as a second line for data.
β¨ Why travellers love eSIMs
- No airport SIM queues β set it up at home before you fly.
- No roaming bills β you pay one flat, upfront price.
- Keep your number β calls and texts on your home SIM still come through.
- Instant β delivered by email in minutes, not posted to you.
- Nothing to lose β no tiny plastic SIM to misplace or swap.
πΆ eSIM vs a physical travel SIM
A physical travel SIM has to be shipped or bought at a kiosk, swapped into your phone (so your home SIM comes out), and can be lost. An eSIM is delivered instantly, installs alongside your home SIM, and is activated with a tap. For most travellers, an eSIM is simply faster and more convenient.
π Is it safe?
Yes. eSIM is an industry standard supported by Apple, Samsung, Google and the major networks. Your plan is tied to your device and canβt be removed by someone swapping a SIM, which is actually more secure than a physical card.
